Jeff Mills has shared a deeply personal statement honouring techno pioneer Juan Atkins following his passing at age 64.In a 20-slide Instagram post, Mills called Atkins a foundational visionary who “helped construct a bridge into the 21st century.” Reflecting on a friendship of over 45 years, Mills expressed that Atkins, who inspired a generation of Detroit electronic musicians, never received the full recognition he deserved. He also noted that even the famous Belleville Three story oversimplifies his true impact.
Mills closed his moving message with “profound respect and gratitude,” offering condolences to the Atkins family and stating, “The bridge he helped construct remains.” The tribute has resonated deeply across the electronic music community, drawing supportive responses from peers like Sven Väth and Kenny Larkin.
